Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim for a delayed flight?
You can claim compensation if your flight arrived 3+ hours late at the final destination, the flight departed from or arrived at a UK/EU airport, and the delay was within the airline's control (not extraordinary circumstances like severe weather or air traffic control strikes).
What are extraordinary circumstances?
Airlines do not have to pay compensation for delays caused by extraordinary circumstances including severe weather, air traffic control restrictions, security risks, political instability, or hidden manufacturing defects. Staff shortages and technical faults are generally NOT extraordinary circumstances.
How long do I have to claim?
In England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, you have 6 years from the date of the flight to make a claim. In Scotland, the limit is 5 years. The clock starts from the scheduled date of travel.
Do I claim in euros or pounds?
The regulation sets amounts in euros. If your airline pays in GBP, they convert at the exchange rate on the date of payment. You are entitled to the euro amount regardless of currency fluctuations.
Can I claim for a connecting flight?
Yes, if your connecting flights were booked as a single booking and you arrived at your final destination 3+ hours late. The distance is measured as the great-circle distance between your origin and final destination.
What about cancelled flights?
If your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before departure and you were not offered an acceptable alternative, you are entitled to compensation at the same rates as delays, plus a full refund or rerouting.
