Frequently Asked Questions

What flights are covered?
Any flight departing from a UK airport (any airline) or arriving at a UK airport on a UK/EU airline is covered under UK261. EU261 covers flights from EU airports or to EU airports on EU airlines.
How do I make a claim?
Write to the airline first with your booking reference, flight details and the regulation you are claiming under. If they refuse or do not respond within 8 weeks, escalate to the CAA or use Alternative Dispute Resolution.
What if I was offered a voucher?
You are entitled to monetary compensation, not vouchers. Airlines cannot force you to accept vouchers instead of cash. However, you may voluntarily accept a voucher if you prefer.
Can I claim for past flights?
Yes. You can claim for flights up to 6 years ago in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or 5 years in Scotland.
Are charter flights covered?
Yes, charter flights and package holiday flights are covered under UK261/EU261 as long as they depart from or arrive at a UK/EU airport.
What about strikes?
Airline staff strikes are generally not considered extraordinary circumstances, so you can usually claim. Air traffic control strikes are extraordinary circumstances and airlines do not have to compensate.
