Who can still claim DLA?
DLA is still available for: children under 16 with a disability or health condition. Adults who were on DLA before April 2013 may still receive it (being reassessed for PIP over time). New adult claimants must claim PIP instead.
What are the DLA rates for 2025/26?
Care component: Lowest £28.70/week, Middle £72.65/week, Highest £108.55/week. Mobility component: Lower £28.70/week, Higher £75.75/week. Maximum total: £184.30/week (highest care + higher mobility).
What is PIP and how is it different from DLA?
PIP (Personal Independence Payment) replaced DLA for working-age adults from 2013. PIP has 2 components: Daily Living (2 rates) and Mobility (2 rates). It's assessed differently — focusing on ability to complete activities, not the condition itself.
Is DLA means-tested?
No — DLA is not means-tested. Your savings, income, or partner's income do not affect your entitlement. It's based solely on how your disability or health condition affects your daily life and mobility.
Does receiving DLA affect other benefits?
DLA can open the door to other benefits: carer's allowance (if someone cares for you), disability premium in means-tested benefits, blue badge eligibility, motability scheme access, and free school transport.
How do I apply for DLA for a child?
Contact DWP on 0800 121 4600 to request a claim pack, or claim online at gov.uk. Medical evidence and detailed information about how the child is affected day-to-day is needed. Citizens Advice can help with the application.
Can DLA be backdated?
DLA is normally paid from the date of claim (not the date of disability onset). Backdating is only available in very limited circumstances. Claim as early as possible — even before a formal diagnosis in many cases.
What happens when a DLA child claimant turns 16?
At 16, DLA child claimants are invited to claim PIP. DWP sends an invitation letter. The child (or young person) must apply for PIP and be assessed — DLA payments continue until the PIP decision is made.
