Understanding OSRS XP Formula
Old School RuneScape uses an exponential XP curve where each level requires progressively more experience. The formula is:
XP = floor(L + 300 × 2^(L/7)) / 4
This means level 92 is exactly halfway to 99 in terms of experience (6,517,253 XP out of 13,034,431 XP).
Complete OSRS XP Table (Levels 1-99)

OSRS Training Tips & Efficient Methods
Combat Skills (Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints)
Early Levels (1-40): Complete Waterfall Quest (13,750 Attack/Strength XP each) and Tree Gnome Village (11,450 Attack XP). These quests take you from level 1 to 30+ instantly. Then train at Sand Crabs or Rock Crabs for AFK training with minimal food requirements.
Mid Levels (40-70): Slayer is highly recommended as it trains combat while earning money and unlocking content. Alternatively, train at Experiments in the Fenkenstrain's Castle basement or at Ammonite Crabs (requires Fossil Island). Nightmare Zone becomes available and offers excellent AFK training with absorption potions.
High Levels (70-99): Slayer remains the most efficient method, offering 40k-60k XP/hr in melee stats while profiting. For pure AFK training, use Nightmare Zone with Dharok's method at 92+ Hitpoints for maximum XP rates (90k-120k XP/hr). Sand Crabs remain a solid AFK option at 50k-60k XP/hr.
Ranged Training
Early Levels (1-40): Complete quests like Animal Magnetism and The Tourist Trap for XP boosts. Train with bone crossbow at low levels, transition to Dorgeshuun crossbow. Sand Crabs offer excellent early training.
Mid Levels (40-75): Chinchompas at Ape Atoll (Monkey Madness II) offer the fastest XP rates (300k-600k/hr) but are expensive. Budget options include Slayer tasks with a Rune crossbow or cannon training. Nightmare Zone with blowpipe is excellent for AFK training.
High Levels (75-99): Red chinchompas at Maniacal Monkeys (500k-800k XP/hr), Vorkath for profit while training (50k-70k XP/hr plus 3m+ GP/hr), or Slayer tasks with toxic blowpipe. Chinning remains the fastest method to 99.
Magic Training
Early Levels (1-55): Quest for early XP: Witch's House (3,325 Magic XP), Imp Catcher (875 Magic XP). Fire Strike to 13, then High Level Alchemy while doing other activities is cost-effective. Splashing works but is slower.
Mid Levels (55-75): High Alchemy is the standard method, breaking even or profiting while gaining 60k-80k XP/hr. Superheat Item on gold ore is slightly faster. String Jewellery offers faster XP (130k-180k/hr) but costs more.
High Levels (75-99): Bursting/Barraging in the Catacombs of Kourend or Monkey Madness 2 tunnels offers 250k-350k XP/hr. Plank Make is profitable at 90+ Magic (120k-160k XP/hr). Slayer tasks with burst/barrage spells combine training with profit.
Prayer Training
All Levels: The most efficient method is using dragon or superior dragon bones on a gilded altar in a player-owned house (350k-700k XP/hr). Budget method: big bones on gilded altar. Wilderness altar offers 350% XP (vs 350% on gilded altar) but has PK risk. Ensouled heads offer slower but cheaper training (100k-200k XP/hr).
Cost Effective: Collecting dragon bones from Vorkath or blue dragons while training combat. Ectofuntus offers higher XP per bone but is very slow (100k XP/hr).
Cooking
Fastest Method (1-99): Wines of Zamorak (30-40 hours to 99, 400k-500k XP/hr), but expensive and requires manual clicking. Karambwans with cooking gauntlets (99.6% success rate at 90+) offer 500k-650k XP/hr and profit.
Profitable Method: Sharks, dark crabs, or anglerfish. These are slower (200k-300k XP/hr) but make money. Cooking at Hosidius Kitchen (5% reduced burn rate) is recommended.
Woodcutting
Early Levels (1-60): Quest for XP (Enlightened Journey, Monk's Friend). Oak trees from 15-30, then willow trees 30-60. Woodcutting Guild offers invisible +7 level boost and faster respawn times.
Mid to High Levels (60-99): Yew trees for AFK (60k-70k XP/hr), Teak trees on Fossil Island with 2-tick method (90k-100k XP/hr, high intensity), or Sulliusceps for good XP and profit (70k-90k XP/hr). Redwoods at 90+ offer very AFK training (60k-65k XP/hr).
Firemaking
All Levels: Wintertodt from 50-99 is the most popular method (200k-300k XP/hr) and offers rewards, supplies, and money. Below 50, burn logs in a line. At 99, expect 200-600m in supply rewards from Wintertodt crates.
Fishing
Early Levels (1-58): Fly fishing trout/salmon at Barbarian Village.Quest XP from Sea Slug and Fishing Contest speeds things up.
Mid to High Levels (58-99): 3-tick Barbarian fishing (100k-120k XP/hr, very click intensive), monkfish for AFK (40k-45k XP/hr), or Karambwan fishing (semi-AFK, 50k-60k XP/hr). Sacred eels at 87+ offer AFK training with profit (30k-35k XP/hr).

High Levels (60-99): Blast Mine (65+ Mining) offers 60k-80k XP/hr and good profit. Volcanic Mine (50+ Mining, best at 70+) provides 70k-100k XP/hr. Granite 3-tick mining reaches 70k-80k XP/hr. Amethyst at 92 is very AFK (15k-20k XP/hr) and profitable.
Smithing
Budget Method (1-99): Superheat Item spell on gold ore with goldsmith gauntlets. Costs ~35-50m GP total but offers good XP rates (300k-400k XP/hr).
Profitable Method: Blast Furnace - smelt gold bars 40-70 (300k-350k XP/hr with goldsmith gauntlets), then runite bars at 85+ (200k-250k XP/hr and profitable). Steel bars at Blast Furnace are break-even and offer 350k-500k XP/hr.
Fast Method: Dart tips or arrowheads at an anvil offer maximum XP rates but lose money.

High Levels (77-99): Blood runes are the standard (45k-50k XP/hr, very AFK, profitable). Soul runes at 90 offer slightly less profit but similar XP. Lavas remain fastest to 99 but cost 150m+ GP. The Guardians of the Rift minigame offers 50k-70k XP/hr with rewards and is engaging content.
Agility
Early Levels (1-60): Complete quests: The Grand Tree (7,900 Agility XP), The Tourist Trap (4,650 Agility XP + 4,650 XP to another skill). Train at highest available rooftop course: Draynor (10-20), Al Kharid (20-30), Varrock (30-40), Canifis (40-60).

Budget methods include attack potions, strength potions, or prayer potions. Always use Amulet of Chemistry to save money (5% chance to save materials).
Cost: Expect to spend 100m-200m GP for 99 Herblore using efficient methods. Slower methods like cleaning herbs reduce costs significantly.
Slayer
Early Levels (1-75): Use the highest level Slayer master available. Complete quests like Smoking Kills for double Slayer points. Train efficiently by blocking bad tasks and using Slayer points for skips. Wilderness Slayer offers fast points and emblems but has PK risk.
High Levels (75-99): Duradel in Shilo Village offers best tasks for XP. Efficient Slayer with cannon and barrage/burst reaches 50k-70k XP/hr. Boss Slayer (87+) unlocks profitable tasks. Superior Slayer monsters drop valuable loot and offer extra XP.
Profitable: Gargoyles (75+), Skeletal Wyverns (72+), Kurasks (70+), Dust Devils (65+), and Nechs (80+) offer great GP/hr while training.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the OSRS XP calculator work?
The OSRS XP calculator uses the official Old School RuneScape experience formula: XP = floor(L + 300 × 2^(L/7)) / 4 for each level L. It calculates the exact XP needed between any two levels and estimates training time based on your XP rates. All values are accurate to the game's exact calculations.
How much XP do I need to get to level 99 in OSRS?
You need exactly 13,034,431 XP to reach level 99 in any skill in Old School RuneScape. This is the maximum level for all skills except Hitpoints (which also caps at 99) and requires consistent training. The halfway point is level 92 at 6,517,253 XP.
What's the fastest skill to level 99 in OSRS?
Cooking is typically the fastest skill to reach 99, taking only 30-40 hours with wines or karambwans at 500k-700k XP/hr. Fletching is also very fast at 15-20 hours with dart fletching (800k-1m XP/hr). Combat skills like Range and Magic can be fast with proper training methods (50-100 hours with efficient methods like chinning or bursting).
How is OSRS XP calculated between levels?
OSRS uses an exponential formula where each level requires more XP than the last. The formula is: Total XP at level L = sum of (floor(L + 300 × 2^(L/7)) / 4) for all levels from 1 to L. Level 92 is exactly half the XP to 99 (6,517,253 XP). This exponential curve means early levels are very fast while later levels require significantly more time and effort.
What are the best XP rates for each skill in OSRS?
Maximum XP rates vary by skill: Fletching (800k-1m/hr with darts), Cooking (500k-700k/hr with karambwans), Firemaking (300k-400k/hr at Wintertodt), Construction (600k-900k/hr with mahogany), Prayer (600k-700k/hr with gilded altar), Combat skills (60k-120k/hr depending on method), and slower skills like Runecrafting (40k-60k/hr) and Agility (40k-90k/hr). See the XP rates table above for detailed breakdowns.
Is this OSRS calculator accurate for all skills?
Yes! This calculator uses the exact formula from Old School RuneScape's game engine. The XP values are accurate for all 23 skills: Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Prayer, Magic, Runecrafting, Construction, Hitpoints, Agility, Herblore, Thieving, Crafting, Fletching, Slayer, Hunter, Mining, Smithing, Fishing, Cooking, Firemaking, Woodcutting, and Farming. All skills use the same XP table and formula.
How long does it take to max out in OSRS?
Maxing all skills to 99 (2,277 total level) takes approximately 1,500-2,500 hours of efficient gameplay. This varies greatly depending on methods used, efficiency, and whether you use tick manipulation. Using optimal methods and no tick manipulation, expect around 2,000 hours. With tick manipulation and maximum efficiency, some players have maxed in under 1,500 hours. Casual players may take 3,000+ hours spread over months or years.
What is the XP difference between level 1 and 99?
The difference is 13,034,431 XP (since level 1 starts at 0 XP). Level 92 is the halfway point to 99 in terms of experience (6,517,253 XP). This exponential curve means the last 7 levels (92-99) take as long as the first 92 levels combined. Many players are surprised to learn that level 50 is less than 1% of the way to 99.
Can I use this calculator for combat level calculations?
This calculator focuses on skill XP calculations. Combat level is calculated differently and depends on multiple skills (Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Prayer, Ranged, Magic). The maximum combat level is 126. For combat level calculations, you'll need a specialized combat calculator that considers all combat stats together.
What's the most expensive skill to train to 99?
Construction is typically the most expensive skill, costing 150m-300m GP depending on methods used (Mahogany Homes vs traditional methods). Prayer is also very expensive at 100m-200m GP for dragon bones on gilded altar. Herblore costs 100m-200m GP. However, these skills are also among the fastest to train. Some skills like Crafting can be trained profitably or at minimal cost.
What's the slowest skill to train in OSRS?
Agility and Runecrafting are considered the slowest skills due to their low XP rates and time-intensive nature. Agility maxes out around 60k-90k XP/hr (with Hallowed Sepulchre), while Runecrafting reaches 50k-60k XP/hr (with lava runes). Mining and Fishing are also relatively slow without tick manipulation. Farming is time-gated rather than slow - you gain XP in bursts when harvesting crops.
