Scotland's 9 bank holidays in 2026

Scotland has its own bank holiday calendar that differs from England, Wales and Northern Ireland in four important ways. Scottish workers, schools and businesses get one extra day off (9 vs England's 8) but with a different distribution across the year.

The four key Scotland-vs-England differences

1. 2nd January — Scotland's "Hogmanay recovery" day

Scotland is the only UK nation that observes 2 January as a statutory bank holiday. The tradition reflects Hogmanay (Scottish New Year), which has historically been a bigger celebration than Christmas in Scotland — particularly in the post-Reformation period when Christmas was suppressed. The "second day" gives workers time to recover.

In 2026, 2 January falls on a Friday — Scottish workers effectively get a 4-day weekend (Thu 1 – Sun 4 Jan). When 1 or 2 January falls on a weekend, Scotland gets substitute Monday/Tuesday holidays.

2. No Easter Monday — Easter Sunday is the focus

Scotland does NOT observe Easter Monday as a bank holiday. This dates to the Scottish Reformation (1560) and the influence of John Knox, when Easter was de-emphasised in favour of weekly worship. In modern Scotland, Easter Monday 6 April 2026 is a normal working day for most — though many Scottish schools still close that day for the Easter holidays.

This means a Scottish worker has 1 fewer "Easter weekend" day off than colleagues in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland.

3. Summer Bank Holiday on the FIRST Monday (not last)

Scotland's August bank holiday falls on the first Monday of August (3 August 2026), 4 weeks earlier than England's last-Monday version (31 August 2026). This dates to Scottish trade traditions where the "Glasgow Fair" and similar industrial holidays were taken in early-to-mid July, with August being a quieter trading period — making early August a logical bank holiday.

In 2026 a Scottish family might find:

4. St Andrew's Day — Scotland's national day (since 2007)

St Andrew's Day on 30 November became a Scottish bank holiday in 2007 under the St Andrew's Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act 2007. In 2026 it falls on a Monday — a 3-day weekend.

Important caveats:

Local Scottish council holidays — by city 2026

On top of the 9 statutory bank holidays, Scottish councils set their own local public holidays. These are NOT bank holidays in the legal sense — banks stay open — but local authority offices, libraries and many businesses close. Common local holidays:

Scottish income tax and bank holidays

Scottish residents pay tax under different bands (19% Starter / 20% Basic / 21% Intermediate / 42% Higher / 45% Advanced / 48% Top) but bank holiday pay is treated identically to UK-wide PAYE rules. There's no Scotland-specific tax treatment of bank holiday premium pay — it's added to your earnings and taxed via your S-prefix tax code (e.g. S1257L).

What's open / closed in Scotland — 2026 bank holidays

Banks

All major UK banks (RBS, Bank of Scotland, Lloyds, Santander, Barclays, HSBC, Virgin Money, TSB) close branches on Scottish bank holidays. ATMs and online banking work normally. BACS and CHAPS payments are paused on Scottish-only holidays (2 Jan, 3 Aug, 30 Nov) — a payment due those days clears the next working day.

Schools (Scottish term dates)

NHS Scotland

NHS Scotland operates emergency services on bank holidays. GP surgeries, dental surgeries and pharmacies (most) close. NHS 24 (111) operates 24/7. Out-of-hours emergency dental clinics open in major cities.

Stock exchange & financial markets

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) follows England's bank holiday calendar — so it's open on Scottish-only holidays (2 Jan, 3 Aug, 30 Nov 2026) but closed on Easter Monday despite that not being a Scottish BH. The FTSE 100 trades normally on Scotland's St Andrew's Day.

Pay rights for Scottish workers on bank holidays

Scottish bank holiday pay rules are identical to the rest of the UK — no statutory premium, contract-dependent enhancement. The Working Time Regulations 1998 apply UK-wide. Key Scottish-specific points:

Scotland's bank holidays diverged from England's after the Bank Holidays Act 1871. Key milestones:

Frequently asked questions

How many bank holidays are there in Scotland in 2026?
Scotland has 9 statutory bank holidays in 2026: New Year's Day (1 Jan), 2nd January (2 Jan), Good Friday (3 Apr), Early May (4 May), Spring (25 May), Summer (3 Aug), St Andrew's Day (30 Nov), Christmas Day (25 Dec) and Boxing Day substitute (28 Dec). That's one more than England and Wales (which have 8).
Is Easter Monday a bank holiday in Scotland?
No. Easter Monday is NOT a bank holiday in Scotland in 2026 (or any year). It's a normal working day for most Scottish workers. This is a long-standing difference from England, Wales and Northern Ireland — dating from the Scottish Reformation.
When is the Scottish Summer Bank Holiday 2026?
Monday 3 August 2026 — the FIRST Monday of August. This is different from England, Wales and Northern Ireland, where the Summer BH falls on the LAST Monday of August (31 August 2026 for those nations).
Is St Andrew's Day a public holiday in Scotland?
Yes — but with a caveat. St Andrew's Day (30 November) became a statutory bank holiday in Scotland under the 2007 Act, but employers are not legally compelled to give workers the day off. Public sector and banks close; many private sector employers operate normally. In 2026 it falls on a Monday.
Is 2 January a bank holiday in Scotland?
Yes. 2 January is a statutory bank holiday in Scotland (only) — historically tied to Hogmanay celebrations. In 2026 it falls on a Friday, so Scottish workers get a 4-day New Year weekend (Thu 1 Jan to Sun 4 Jan 2026).
Are Scottish banks open on St Andrew's Day 2026?
No — Scottish branches of all major UK banks close on Monday 30 November 2026 for St Andrew's Day. ATMs work normally; online and mobile banking is unaffected; BACS and CHAPS clearing is paused for Scottish-only holidays.
Do I pay extra Scottish tax on bank holiday premium pay?
No. Bank holiday premium pay (time-and-a-half, double-time) is treated as normal earnings under PAYE. Scottish residents pay Scottish income tax bands (S-prefix tax code, e.g. S1257L) but there's no Scotland-specific treatment of BH pay.
Why is the Scottish August bank holiday earlier than England's?
Tradition. Scotland's industrial holidays (Glasgow Fair, similar trade fortnights) historically ran in mid-July. By the 1871 Bank Holidays Act, the early-August date was already established for Scotland. The 1971 Act formalised it as the FIRST Monday of August (3 August 2026), versus England's LAST Monday (31 August 2026).
Are local Scottish council holidays the same as bank holidays?
No. Local council holidays (Glasgow Fair Monday, Edinburgh Spring, etc.) are set by individual councils and are NOT bank holidays in the legal sense. Banks stay open, but council offices, libraries and many local businesses close. They're employment-contract dependent — check with your employer.
If I work for an English company but live in Scotland, which bank holidays do I get?
Whichever your employment contract specifies — usually England's calendar. Many Scottish residents working for English-registered employers don't get 2 January, Scottish Summer BH (3 Aug 2026), or St Andrew's Day. This is lawful as long as your contract is clear. Negotiate locally if it matters to you.
