Frequently Asked Questions

Do electric vehicles now pay VED?

Yes. Zero-emission vehicles (EVs) began paying Vehicle Excise Duty from 1 April 2025. Previously they were exempt. New EVs registered from 1 April 2025 pay £10 in year 1, then £195 standard rate from year 2.

What is the expensive car supplement for EVs?

Electric vehicles with a list price over £40,000 pay an additional 'expensive car supplement' of £410 per year. This applies from years 2–6 (5 years) after first registration. It applies to EVs first registered from April 2025.

What VED do older EVs pay?

EVs first registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025 start paying the standard rate (£195) from 1 April 2025. They do NOT pay first-year rates. The expensive car supplement may also apply if the original list price exceeded £40,000.

What about plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs)?

PHEVs pay VED based on their CO2 emissions, the same as petrol and diesel vehicles. Very low-emission PHEVs (≤50g/km CO2) pay £10 first-year rate and £195 standard rate.

Why did the government start taxing EVs?

As EV uptake has grown substantially, the government needed to maintain VED revenues. Fuel duty (which EVs don't pay) raises ~£25bn annually. EV VED was introduced to ensure electric vehicle owners contribute to road funding.

Do motorbikes and other vehicles pay the same EV VED?

No. Zero-emission motorcycles pay a lower VED rate than cars. Light goods vehicles (vans) have separate VED rates. Lorries, buses and taxis follow different charging frameworks.

Is there any VED exemption left for zero-emission vehicles?

Disabled drivers with a qualifying disability certificate can still claim 50% or 100% VED discounts. Blue Badge holders meeting DWP criteria may qualify regardless of vehicle type.

How does first-year VED work if I buy from a dealer?

The dealer typically pays first-year VED and includes it in the on-the-road price. When you sell the car, any unused VED months are refunded by DVLA. The new owner must re-register the VED.
