Frequently Asked Questions

What is Widowed Parent's Allowance?

Widowed Parent's Allowance (WPA) was a weekly benefit for bereaved parents with dependent children, where the deceased spouse/civil partner had a sufficient NI record. It applies only for deaths before 6 April 2017.

Was WPA replaced?

Yes — Bereavement Support Payment replaced WPA for deaths on or after 6 April 2017. BSP pays a lump sum plus 18 months of monthly payments (higher rate with children: £3,500 + £350/month). Existing WPA claimants continue on WPA.

Is Widowed Parent's Allowance taxable?

Yes — WPA is taxable income and must be declared on self-assessment if you have other income. Bereavement Support Payment (for newer deaths) is tax-free.

When does Widowed Parent's Allowance stop?

WPA stops when: your youngest qualifying child reaches age 16 (or 20 in approved full-time education/training), you remarry or form a civil partnership, you begin cohabiting, or you reach State Pension age.

How much is Widowed Parent's Allowance?

The rate depends on the deceased's NI record. Maximum rate 2025/26: approximately £148.40/week. A partial NI record gives a reduced rate. Exact calculation requires the DWP to assess the NI record.

Can I receive WPA and Universal Credit at the same time?

WPA counts as income for Universal Credit purposes. Your UC payment will be reduced by £1 for every £1 of WPA received (within the UC calculation, after any disregards).

What happens if I start cohabiting while on WPA?

WPA stops immediately if you start living with a new partner as if you are married (cohabiting). You must inform DWP immediately. Failing to report can result in an overpayment that must be repaid.

Can I apply for WPA now for an older bereavement?

You can backdate a WPA claim, but there are time limits. Contact DWP as soon as possible — backdating beyond 3 months may not be possible. If the death was before April 2017 and you are still eligible, you can still claim WPA.
