Frequently Asked Questions

How much childcare does Universal Credit pay?

UC pays 85% of registered childcare costs, up to £1,014.63/month for one child (maximum UC childcare element: £862.44/month) or £1,739.37/month for two or more children (maximum UC childcare element: £1,478.46/month) — 2025/26 rates.

Who qualifies for UC childcare support?

You must be working or about to start work. Single parents must be working. Couples must both be working, unless one is a carer, disabled, or has limited capability for work. Children must be under 17 (or 16 if disabled).

Do I pay childcare first or does UC pay upfront?

In most cases, you pay the childcare provider first, then report the costs to DWP. UC reimburses 85% in your next payment. Some councils and childcare providers work directly with DWP in pilot schemes to pay upfront.

What childcare providers are eligible?

Ofsted-registered childminders, nurseries, after-school clubs, holiday clubs, and childcare agencies. Non-registered family members (grandparents, aunts) do not qualify, even if you pay them.

Can I get UC childcare and Tax-Free Childcare at the same time?

No — you cannot combine UC childcare support with Tax-Free Childcare (TFC) for the same child. Generally, UC childcare is better for lower incomes and TFC for higher incomes. Use the government childcare comparison tool at childcarechoices.gov.uk.

What if my childcare costs vary each month?

Report your actual costs to DWP each assessment period. You need to report childcare costs within 2 assessment periods of paying them. Use the UC journal or call your work coach to report.

Is there a minimum work hours requirement?

No — there is no minimum hours requirement to access UC childcare support, as long as you are in work (including very low hours). However, DWP may discuss childcare planning with you during work capability discussions.

What is the difference between UC childcare and the 30 hours free childcare?

The 30 hours free childcare (for working parents of 3-4 year olds) is a separate scheme — it provides free childcare hours directly. UC childcare support covers costs after the free hours are used. You can use both.
