Time and a Half Pay Calculator
Work out your overtime rate, overtime pay and total gross pay. Enter your normal hourly rate (or a salary to convert), the overtime hours and the multiplier set by your contract.
The Time and a Half Calculator works out exactly how much your overtime is worth. Enter your normal hourly rate — or convert it from your annual salary — choose how many overtime hours you worked, and pick the multiplier your contract uses (1.5× for time and a half, 1.25× for time and a quarter, or 2× for double time). The calculator instantly shows your enhanced overtime rate, your gross overtime pay, your total and a rough take-home estimate after Income Tax and National Insurance.
It is built for UK shift workers, hourly-paid staff, hospitality and retail employees, NHS and care workers, warehouse and factory staff, and anyone whose contract pays a premium for extra hours. Because there is no statutory overtime rate in the UK, your actual multiplier is set by your employment contract — this tool lets you model any rate. It also flags whether your underlying rate meets the April 2026 National Minimum Wage, the one legal floor that always applies.
How the time and a half calculation works
Time and a half simply means your hourly rate multiplied by 1.5. The calculator uses two short steps:
- Overtime rate = normal hourly rate × multiplier. For time and a half the multiplier is 1.5.
- Overtime pay = overtime rate × overtime hours.
If you only know your salary, the tool first converts it to an hourly rate using annual salary ÷ 52 weeks ÷ your normal weekly hours. The take-home estimate deducts a basic-rate assumption of 20% Income Tax plus 8% employee National Insurance from the overtime portion — useful as a guide, though your real deductions depend on your total income and tax code.
Worked example
Sam earns £12.71 an hour (the April 2026 National Living Wage). One week Sam works 10 hours of overtime paid at time and a half (1.5×).
- Overtime rate: £12.71 × 1.5 = £19.07 per hour (rounded)
- Overtime pay: £19.07 × 10 hours = £190.65 gross
- Estimated take-home on that overtime (after 20% tax + 8% NI): about £137.27
If Sam instead worked those 10 hours at double time (2×), the overtime pay would be £254.20 gross.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate time and a half?
Multiply your normal hourly rate by 1.5 to get the time-and-a-half rate, then multiply that by the number of overtime hours you worked. For example, £12 × 1.5 = £18 per overtime hour. Your total gross pay is your normal pay plus the overtime pay.
Is time and a half required by law in the UK?
No. There is no statutory overtime rate in the UK. Whether you get time and a half (1.5×), double time (2×) or just your normal rate for overtime is set by your employment contract. The only legal rule is that your average pay across all hours worked must not fall below the National Minimum Wage.
What is the National Minimum Wage I must be paid?
From April 2026 the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 per hour, £10.85 for 18 to 20-year-olds, and £8.00 for under-18s and apprentices. Your average pay (including overtime) must not drop below the rate for your age.
Is overtime taxed differently?
No. Overtime pay is taxed at your normal Income Tax and National Insurance rates — there is no special ‘overtime tax’. However, the extra income can push part of your earnings into a higher tax band, so the take-home from each overtime hour may be less than your headline rate.
