Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Plastic Packaging Tax rate for 2026?
The Plastic Packaging Tax rate for 2025/26 (from 1 April 2025) is £217.85 per tonne. It applies to plastic packaging manufactured in or imported into the UK that contains less than 30% recycled plastic.
Who needs to register for Plastic Packaging Tax?
UK manufacturers or importers must register with HMRC if they manufacture or import 10 or more tonnes of plastic packaging in a 12-month period, even if some of that packaging is exempt.
What counts as 30% recycled content?
Only chemically or mechanically recycled plastic counts. Material recovery after collection must have been processed specifically to make it suitable for use as plastic again. Post-consumer waste and post-industrial waste both count.
Is exported packaging subject to PPT?
If packaging is manufactured in the UK but exported, you can claim a credit or relief if it is exported within 12 months. Packaging manufactured specifically for export can be excluded from the tax.
Can the tax be passed down the supply chain?
Yes. Manufacturers and importers may pass the cost of PPT to customers. You must show PPT as a separate line item on invoices so downstream businesses can see the cost.
