Frequently Asked Questions

What is Personal Independence Payment (PIP)?

PIP is a non-means-tested, non-taxable benefit for people aged 16–66 who have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability that affects daily living or mobility. It replaced Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for working-age adults.

What are the PIP rates for 2025/26?

Daily Living: Standard £72.65/week, Enhanced £108.55/week. Mobility: Standard £28.70/week, Enhanced £75.75/week. Maximum combined: Enhanced daily living + enhanced mobility = £184.30/week (£9,583.60/year).

How is PIP assessed?

PIP is assessed by DWP-commissioned assessors (Capita or Atos). You complete a PIP2 form describing how your condition affects you on your worst days. Then typically an assessment interview (face-to-face or phone). Decisions are based on a points system for 10 daily living activities and 2 mobility activities.

Is PIP taxable?

No. PIP is completely non-taxable. It does not count as income for tax purposes and does not affect your Personal Allowance calculation. It is also disregarded as income for benefits means-testing.

Does PIP affect Universal Credit?

Receiving PIP (either component) can increase your Universal Credit. PIP enhanced daily living also qualifies you for the Universal Credit limited capability for work and work-related activity (LCWRA) element if you cannot work.

What does the Motability scheme offer PIP recipients?

People with enhanced mobility PIP can lease a new car, scooter, or powered wheelchair through Motability, using their weekly PIP mobility allowance as payment. Some vehicles require a down payment; many mainstream cars are available with no advance payment.

Can PIP be claimed alongside working?

Yes. PIP is not means-tested and does not depend on whether you work or have savings. It is paid to compensate for the extra costs of living with a disability or health condition, regardless of employment status.

What is the difference between PIP and DLA?

DLA (Disability Living Allowance) still applies to children under 16 and adults who were on DLA before the PIP migration. PIP replaced DLA for new working-age claimants from 2013 and for most existing DLA claimants via a reassessment process.

How long does a PIP award last?

PIP awards are made for fixed periods (typically 2–10 years) or indefinitely (ongoing awards). DWP reviews awards at the end of the period. Indefinite awards may still be reviewed. You must tell DWP if your condition significantly changes.

Can I appeal a PIP decision?

Yes. You can request a Mandatory Reconsideration (MR) within 1 month of the decision. If the MR is unsuccessful, you can appeal to an independent Social Security Tribunal. Appeal success rates are high (around 70–75% at tribunal stage for those who appeal).

Is PIP being replaced by a new benefit?

The government proposed replacing PIP's daily living component with a new 'reformed daily living activity' system from 2026/27, moving to more objective qualifying criteria. As of March 2026, these reforms are still being consulted on.

What conditions qualify for PIP?

PIP is based on functional impact, not diagnosis. Any physical or mental health condition that significantly affects daily living or mobility for at least 9 months can qualify. Common qualifying conditions include MS, Parkinson's, arthritis, depression, anxiety, and autism.
