Frequently Asked Questions
What is the HMRC mileage rate for 2025/26?
The HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rates for 2025/26 are: Cars and vans - 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, then 25p per mile thereafter. Motorcycles - 24p per mile. Bicycles - 20p per mile. These rates have remained unchanged since 2011.
What is Mileage Allowance Relief (MAR)?
Mileage Allowance Relief (MAR) is tax relief you can claim when your employer pays you less than the approved mileage rate, or nothing at all, for using your own vehicle for business travel. You can claim the difference between what you received and the HMRC approved rate. For a basic rate taxpayer, this means 20% tax relief on the shortfall.
Can I claim mileage for commuting to work?
No, you cannot claim mileage for ordinary commuting between your home and your normal workplace. However, you can claim for travel to temporary workplaces, client sites, meetings at different locations, or if you work from home and travel to the office occasionally.
How do I claim mileage tax relief?
You can claim mileage tax relief through Self Assessment if you complete a tax return, or by completing form P87 if you're employed and don't file a return. You'll need records of your business journeys including dates, destinations, purposes, and miles driven. Keep a mileage log for at least 6 years.
What's the difference between AMAP and company car mileage rates?
AMAP (Approved Mileage Allowance Payments) applies when you use your OWN vehicle for business travel - rates are 45p/25p per mile. Advisory Fuel Rates apply to COMPANY cars and vary by engine size and fuel type, typically ranging from 9p to 26p per mile.
