Complete Guide to eBay UK Seller Fees 2025/26
How eBay Fees Work in the UK
eBay UK operates a fee structure centred on the Final Value Fee (FVF) — a percentage charged on the total amount the buyer pays, including the item price and any postage or delivery charges. This is the primary cost for most sellers and is automatically deducted from your seller account after the transaction completes.
For most categories in 2025, the FVF is 12.8% of the total transaction value plus a fixed 30p per order. This means if you sell a gadget for £40 and charge £4.99 postage, eBay calculates the FVF on £44.99 — resulting in a fee of approximately £6.07.
The fixed 30p fee is charged once per order regardless of how many items are in that order, which makes it more economical when selling multiple items to the same buyer in a single transaction. For sellers with an eBay Shop subscription, some categories offer discounted FVF rates.
Insertion fees (listing fees) apply once sellers exceed their monthly free listing allocation. Private sellers typically receive 1,000 free fixed-price listings per month, with a 35p fee applied to each additional listing. Auction-style listings are also subject to insertion fees beyond the free allowance.
eBay Managed Payments — The End of PayPal Fees
One of the most significant changes to eBay UK fees in recent years was the transition to eBay Managed Payments, completed across all UK sellers in 2021. Before this change, sellers paid two separate fees: an eBay FVF (around 10%) and a separate PayPal transaction fee (approximately 3.4% plus 20p). Together, these typically amounted to around 13–14% of the transaction value.
Under Managed Payments, eBay processes all payments directly — including Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and bank transfers — and charges a single combined fee. The current standard rate of 12.8% plus 30p replaces both the old eBay FVF and the PayPal fee, generally resulting in a similar or slightly lower total cost for most sellers.
Payouts to your bank account are made within 2 business days of the item being marked dispatched, and sellers can request faster payouts if required. eBay does not charge an additional payout fee for standard bank transfers.
eBay Shop Subscriptions — Basic, Featured and Anchor
eBay offers three Shop subscription tiers for UK sellers who want lower fees and more free listings:
- Basic Shop (£25/month or £228/year): Reduced FVF rates on selected categories, 400 free fixed-price listings per month, plus discounted insertion fees beyond the allowance.
- Featured Shop (£62/month or £564/year): Further reduced FVF rates, 2,000 free fixed-price listings, priority customer service.
- Anchor Shop (£289/month or £2,628/year): Lowest FVF rates, 10,000 free fixed-price listings, dedicated customer manager.
For a Basic Shop subscriber, the standard FVF on most categories drops to around 11.9% (versus 12.8% for non-shop sellers). The break-even point — where the subscription fee is recovered through savings — depends on your sales volume and category mix. As a rough guide, Basic Shop starts to pay off once you are generating around £2,500–£3,000 per month in eBay sales.
UK Seller Limits and HMRC Tax Obligations
New eBay UK sellers start with default selling limits — typically £650 and 10 listings in the first month — which increase automatically as you build a positive feedback history and verify your account. Business-verified sellers generally have higher limits from the outset.
From January 2024, eBay and other online platforms are required to report UK seller data to HMRC under new OECD DAC7 rules. If you earn more than €2,000 (approximately £1,700) or make more than 30 transactions in a calendar year, eBay will report your details to HMRC. This does not necessarily mean you owe tax — the £1,000 trading allowance means you can earn up to £1,000/year from casual selling without needing to declare it — but any income above this threshold should be included on a Self Assessment tax return.
Business sellers with turnover above £90,000 must register for VAT. Below this threshold, VAT registration is voluntary but may be beneficial if you sell to other VAT-registered businesses. eBay collects and remits VAT on behalf of overseas sellers on goods sold to UK buyers, but UK-based business sellers remain responsible for their own VAT compliance.
Tips to Maximise eBay Profit in 2025
- Use free postage strategically: Incorporating postage into your listed price still means eBay charges FVF on the same total amount — but it can increase click-through and conversion rates, often more than offsetting any perceived disadvantage.
- Choose the right category: Business & Industrial (9.5%) and general items (12.8%) have lower rates than Books/Media (14.5%). List in the most accurate and lowest-fee category your item qualifies for.
- Consider a Shop subscription: If you sell consistently above £3,000/month, a Basic Shop subscription typically reduces your total fee outlay despite the monthly cost.
- Time your listings: eBay traffic peaks at weekends and evenings. Auctions ending at these times achieve higher average sale prices and FVF savings on the same goods.
- Cross-list on multiple platforms: Using Vinted for secondhand fashion (0% seller fee), Depop for vintage clothing, and eBay for electronics and collectibles maximises your margin across different categories.
- Track all costs accurately: Use our calculator above to ensure you are accounting for FVF, insertion fees, postage costs, item cost, packaging materials, and any subscription fees before pricing items.
