Frequently Asked Questions

What is an each-way bet?

An each-way bet is two bets in one — a win bet and a place bet of equal stake. If the selection wins, both parts pay out. If the selection places (finishes in the top 2, 3, 4 or 5 positions depending on the race), only the place part pays. Your total stake is always doubled as you are placing two separate bets.

What are place terms and how do they work?

Place terms determine the fraction of the win odds paid for a place and the number of qualifying places. Common terms are 1/4 odds for 4 places (big handicaps), 1/5 odds for 3 places (standard races with 8+ runners), and 1/8 odds for 2 places (each-way specials). The place return = Stake × (1 + (Win Odds − 1) × Place Fraction).

How much does an each-way bet cost?

An each-way bet always costs double your stated stake. If you place a £5 each-way bet, your total outlay is £10 — £5 for the win part and £5 for the place part. Always check you are comfortable with the total cost before placing.

When is an each-way bet good value?

Each-way bets offer value when the place odds (after fraction reduction) still exceed the true probability of placing. In large fields with short-priced favourites, each-way bets on longer-priced selections can return more than a straight win bet if they place. Compare the place return to the stake paid for the place part alone.

Can I each-way bet on non-horse racing events?

Yes. Bookmakers offer each-way betting on golf, football specials, snooker, and other sports. The place terms vary — golf tournaments typically pay 1/4 odds for top 5 or top 8 finishers. Always check the specific each-way terms offered by your bookmaker before placing.
