Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the London Congestion Charge?
The London Congestion Charge is £15 per day for most vehicles entering the congestion zone. It operates 7am-6pm Monday to Friday and 12pm-6pm Saturday, Sunday, and bank holidays. Payment can be made online, by phone, or via Auto Pay. Late payment incurs a Penalty Charge Notice of £160 (reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days).
Are electric vehicles exempt?
Yes, fully electric vehicles (EVs) are exempt from the Congestion Charge. However, you must register for the Cleaner Vehicle Discount in advance. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are no longer exempt — the previous exemption ended in December 2025. Motorbikes, mopeds, and licensed taxis are also exempt.
What are the congestion zone boundaries?
The congestion zone covers central London, roughly bounded by the inner ring road: Marylebone Road, Euston Road, Pentonville Road, City Road, and south of the Thames to Kennington, Vauxhall, and Victoria. The boundary is clearly signed. You can check specific streets on the TfL website.
Can I get a residents' discount?
Residents within the congestion zone receive a 90% discount, paying approximately £1.50 per day instead of £15. You must register and pay an annual registration fee of £10. The discount applies to one vehicle per household. Residents in adjacent boroughs do not qualify.
What if I forget to pay?
If you fail to pay by midnight the following charging day, you receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £160, reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days. If unpaid, the PCN increases. You can appeal a PCN if you believe it was issued incorrectly. Set up Auto Pay to avoid forgetting.
