Advanced Learner Loan Repayments

Frequently Asked Questions

An Advanced Learner Loan (ALL) is a government loan for adults in England aged 19+ studying at Level 3, 4, 5, or 6 qualifications at approved colleges and providers. No credit checks required.
Repayments start the April after you leave your course and only when earning above £27,295/year (2025/26). You repay 9% of income above this threshold. Below the threshold, nothing is repaid.
Advanced Learner Loans are written off after 30 years, or if you die, or become permanently disabled. This makes them low risk for lower earners.
Eligible qualifications: Level 3 (A-levels, BTECs, NVQs), Level 4 (HNCs, foundation degrees), Level 5 (HNDs), and certain Level 6 qualifications at approved providers.
Interest is charged at RPI + 3% while studying and earning below the repayment threshold. Above the threshold, interest reduces to 0-3% based on income. Interest cannot exceed RPI + 3%.
Yes. An Advanced Learner Loan for Level 3-5 and an undergraduate Student Loan are separate schemes. Repayments are calculated separately from different income thresholds.
No. Advanced Learner Loans are available to all eligible adults regardless of employment status. They are for the course fees only — there is no maintenance loan equivalent.
Over 900 providers across England offer ALL-funded qualifications. Search the Register of Training Organisations on the Education and Skills Funding Agency website.
For most students, yes. Advanced Learner Loans have income-contingent repayments, no credit checks, 30-year write-off, and no repayment if you can't afford it. Personal loans have fixed repayments.
Advanced Learner Loans cover tuition fees only. Additional funding from your council or employer may be needed for course materials, travel, and other costs.
Loans are paid directly to your college. If you withdraw, your eligibility for future ALLs may be affected. The loan remains outstanding but repayment only begins when earnings exceed the threshold.
Advanced Learner Loans are not income for benefits purposes and do not affect Universal Credit, housing benefit, or other means-tested benefits.
