Frequently Asked Questions

How does the PIP points system work? +
PIP is assessed by scoring 12 activities — 10 daily living and 2 mobility. Each activity has descriptors worth different points. Your total daily living score and mobility score determine which components and rates you qualify for: 8+ points = Standard rate, 12+ points = Enhanced rate.
How many points do I need for PIP? +
You need at least 8 points in daily living activities to receive the standard daily living component (£72.65/week), and 12+ points for the enhanced rate (£108.55/week). For mobility, 8+ points gives standard rate (£28.70/week) and 12+ gives enhanced rate (£75.75/week).
Do PIP points need to apply on more than half of days? +
Yes. PIP descriptors apply if the condition affects you on more than 50% of days. You should answer based on your typical day — not your best day or worst day. If the impact varies day-to-day, consider which descriptor applies most of the time.
Can mental health conditions qualify for PIP? +
Yes. PIP is not just for physical conditions. Mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia) and neurodevelopmental conditions (autism, ADHD) can qualify. The key is how the condition affects your ability to carry out daily living and mobility activities.
What happens at a PIP assessment? +
After submitting the PIP2 form, most claimants are invited to a telephone or face-to-face assessment with a healthcare professional contracted by the DWP. The assessor scores each activity using the descriptors and submits a report. The DWP makes the final decision.
Can I challenge a PIP decision? +
Yes. If you disagree with a PIP decision, you can request a Mandatory Reconsideration (MR) within 1 month. If the MR is unsuccessful, you can appeal to an independent First-tier Tribunal. Citizens Advice and welfare rights organisations can help you gather evidence and prepare your case.
Is PIP affected by income or work? +
No. PIP is not means-tested. Your income, savings, whether you work, and your employment status have no effect on your PIP entitlement. PIP is based solely on the impact of your condition on your daily living and mobility.
What is the PIP2 form? +
The PIP2 ('How your disability affects you') is the main claim form sent after you call to start a PIP claim. It asks about each daily living and mobility activity. Be detailed — use the 'extra information' boxes to explain how aids, adaptations, or help from others affect each activity.
What are the mobility activities for PIP? +
There are two PIP mobility activities: planning and following journeys (which covers ability to navigate unfamiliar routes, including due to cognitive/mental health conditions), and moving around (physical ability to walk). Each is scored 0–12 points.
What counts as daily living activities for PIP? +
Daily living activities include: preparing food, taking nutrition, managing therapy or monitoring a health condition, washing and bathing, managing toilet needs, dressing and undressing, communicating verbally, reading and understanding signs, engaging with others face-to-face, and making budgeting decisions.
How long does a PIP award last? +
PIP awards are usually time-limited (e.g., 2–5 years) or ongoing with a light-touch review. The DWP will send a review letter before the award ends. Some people with severe long-term conditions receive longer or indefinite awards. Always respond to review letters to avoid losing your PIP.
