Frequently Asked Questions

What is SORN?
Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) tells the DVLA your vehicle is off the road and not being driven. Once SORNed, you do not need to pay road tax but cannot use the vehicle on public roads.
How do I declare SORN?
Online at gov.uk/make-a-sorn, by phone (0300 790 6802), or by post using form V890. Takes immediate effect when done online.
How much road tax will DVLA refund?
DVLA refunds complete calendar months remaining on your tax disc. The current month is not refunded. A cheque is sent to the registered keeper within 4–6 weeks.
Can I still use the vehicle after declaring SORN?
No — a SORNed vehicle must be kept off public roads. It can be on private land (driveway, garage, private land). Driving a SORNed vehicle is illegal and results in a fine and points.
Do I still need MOT and insurance for a SORNed vehicle?
MOT: No — you do not need a valid MOT for a SORNed vehicle unless you need to drive it to an MOT test. Insurance: No legal requirement, but recommended for fire/theft/liability while stored.
What happens if I sell a SORNed vehicle?
The SORN does not transfer to the new owner automatically. The new owner must tax the vehicle before using it. You should notify DVLA of the sale via V5C (logbook).
How long does SORN last?
SORN is continuous — it does not expire annually. It remains valid until the vehicle is taxed or sold. No renewal needed.
What if I forget to SORN and stop using the car?
DVLA will chase for unpaid VED. A Continuous Insurance Enforcement notice may also be issued. Always SORN promptly to avoid penalties.
What is the penalty for driving a SORNed vehicle?
Fixed penalty of £50 (can rise to £1,000 if contested). The vehicle may also be clamped or impounded.
Can I SORN a vehicle registered in someone else's name?
Only the registered keeper can declare SORN. If you have power of attorney or are the legal owner, you may be able to — check with DVLA.
Can I declare SORN for part of the year?
Yes — you can SORN and re-tax multiple times. DVLA refunds the remaining months each time you SORN. You must re-tax before using on the road again.
What VED rate applies to my car in 2025/26?
From April 2025, standard VED is £190/year for most petrol/diesel cars. Electric vehicles are now £190 for the first full year (previously free). Check gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables for your specific vehicle.
