Income tax in Scotland is devolved — Holyrood sets the rates and bands while HMRC collects. From April 2025 there are 6 bands, more than England, with a top rate of 48% for earnings above £125,140.
How scottish income tax calculator 2025/26 works in 2025/26
If your main residence is in Scotland (and you spent most of the tax year there), HMRC issues an S-prefix tax code (e.g. S1257L). Income tax follows Scottish bands; National Insurance and savings/dividend taxes remain UK-wide.
Scottish bands 2025/26 (after £12,570 personal allowance):
- Starter rate 19% — £12,571 to £14,876 (next £2,306)
- Basic rate 20% — £14,877 to £26,561 (next £11,685)
- Intermediate rate 21% — £26,562 to £43,662 (next £17,101)
- Higher rate 42% — £43,663 to £75,000 (next £31,338)
- Advanced rate 45% — £75,001 to £125,140 (next £50,140)
- Top rate 48% — £125,141+
The personal allowance still tapers above £100,000 (£1 lost per £2 earned, gone at £125,140) — same UK-wide rule.
Worked example: £25,000 Scottish junior worker
PA £12,570; £2,306 at 19% (£438.14) + £10,124 at 20% (£2,024.80) = £2,462.94 tax. NI £994.40. Take-home £21,542.66.
Gross: £25,000 → Take-home: £21,542.66/year (£1,795.22/month)
Worked example: £50,000 Scottish higher rate
£2,306 at 19% + £11,685 at 20% + £17,101 at 21% + £6,338 at 42% = £8,602.79 tax. NI £3,010.60. Take-home £38,386.61.
Gross: £50,000 → Take-home: £38,386.61/year (£3,198.88/month)
Worked example: £100,000 Scottish advanced rate
£2,306 at 19% + £11,685 at 20% + £17,101 at 21% + £31,338 at 42% + £25,000 at 45% = £30,654.79 tax. NI £4,010.60. Take-home £65,334.61.
Gross: £100,000 → Take-home: £65,334.61/year (£5,444.55/month)
