Salary sacrifice is a legal arrangement where you give up part of your gross salary in exchange for a non-cash benefit (pension, EV, cycle, childcare). Because the sacrificed amount comes off your gross pre-tax/NI, you save your full marginal rate. This calculator shows exact savings for 2025/26.
How salary sacrifice tax calculator works in 2025/26
Why salary sacrifice beats personal contribution:
| Method | £100 to Pension | Real Cost | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal pension (basic) | £100 | £80 (20% relief at source) | 20% |
| Salary sacrifice (basic) | £100 | £72 (28% saved) | 28% |
| Personal pension (higher) | £100 | £60 (40% claim back) | 40% |
| Salary sacrifice (higher) | £100 | £58 (42% saved) | 42% |
Plus your employer saves 13.8% NI on the sacrificed amount — many enlightened employers pass this saving back as additional pension contribution, doubling the benefit.
Common salary sacrifice schemes 2025/26:
- Pension — most common, saves 28-47%, no NI on contributions

- Cycle to Work — full bike value (up to £4k+ now after FCA changes), saves 32-47%
- Childcare voucher — legacy scheme, closed to new entrants since Oct 2018
- Tax-free childcare — current government scheme (not strictly salary sacrifice)
