Frequently asked questions

Is PIP taxable?
No — PIP is completely tax-free. Doesn't count towards Personal Allowance, doesn't affect tax bands. Same as Attendance Allowance and DLA.
What's the difference between PIP and DLA?
DLA was replaced by PIP for working-age (16-65) starting 2013. Existing DLA child claimants transition to PIP at 16. DLA still exists for under-16s. Otherwise no new DLA claims for adults.
Does PIP affect Universal Credit?
PIP is IGNORED for UC means-test. Receiving PIP can INCREASE your UC by triggering disability premium / LCWRA element + Carer Element for someone caring for you.
How long does PIP application take?
DWP processing typically 14-20 weeks. Includes: form submission (PIP2), medical evidence, assessment (face-to-face, phone, or video). Backdated to claim date if approved.
Will I get reassessed?
Yes — fixed-period awards (1-10 years) get reassessed before expiry. Award letter states review date. Indefinite/long-term conditions may have 10-year light-touch review introduced 2023+.
What if my application is rejected?
Three options: (1) Mandatory Reconsideration (challenge within 1 month), (2) HMCTS Tribunal appeal if MR rejected, (3) New application with worsened condition. ~70% of tribunal appeals succeed — strong evidence is key.
Does PIP affect my pension?
No — PIP doesn't affect State Pension. Both can be received simultaneously up to State Pension age. After SP age, PIP transitions to Attendance Allowance (existing PIP can continue if claim made before SP age).
