Gambling Winnings Tax Calculator
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I pay tax on gambling winnings in the UK?
No. Gambling winnings are completely tax-free for UK residents. Whether you win at a bookmaker, online casino, poker tournament, bingo, spread betting, or matched betting, HMRC does not tax those winnings. The operators pay Gambling Duty and Remote Gaming Duty on their profits instead.
Is matched betting taxable in the UK?
No. Matched betting profits are tax-free in the UK. HMRC treats matched betting as gambling for individuals, regardless of how systematic or profitable the activity is. The tax-free status applies to qualifying bets, lay bets, and free bet conversions.
Could a professional gambler be taxed in the UK?
In theory yes, but in practice this is extremely rare. For HMRC to tax a gambler as a trader, they would need to demonstrate a high level of organisation, skill, and business-like behaviour — and even then, HMRC has rarely succeeded in court. The landmark case Graham v Green (1925) established that gambling is not a trade. Subsequent cases have rarely overturned this principle.
Can I deduct gambling losses from my tax bill?
No. Because gambling winnings are tax-free, gambling losses are also not tax-deductible. You cannot offset betting losses against income or capital gains. This applies to all forms of gambling including spread betting (where losses are also non-deductible), casino losses, and matched betting losses.
When might gambling winnings be taxed?
The main scenarios where gambling-related income could be taxable are: (1) if HMRC successfully classifies your activity as a trade (extremely rare); (2) if you receive bonuses, referral fees, or affiliate income related to gambling (these are not winnings and are taxable); (3) if you are employed by a gambling company and receive winnings as part of your employment. Pure gambling winnings remain tax-free.
